Editorial Standards
How we work.
BLK Society is an independent editorial platform and directory dedicated to Black-owned brands, stores, and founders across the United States. These are the standards that govern everything we publish and every business we list. They are not decoration. They are the reason you can trust the mark.
Who's behind this
A named editor stands behind every word.
BLK Society is founded and edited by Sencera Yvonne. Every article in The Archive and every listing in the directory is reviewed and edited under her name. When something is wrong, there is a real person accountable for making it right, not a faceless algorithm and not a crowd.
As we grow, contributors will be credited by name here and on their work.
Verification
Every business is checked by hand.
Before a brand, store, or founder appears in the directory, we confirm three things ourselves:
- Black ownership, confirmed through founder records, first-party sources, and the business's own materials.
- A real, operating business, with a live storefront or product line and a working presence.
- Current information. When a business closes, moves, or changes hands, we update or remove it.
Verification cannot be purchased, sponsored, or upgraded with an ad spend. The badge means the same thing for every business that carries it.
Sourcing & accuracy
We cite, and we don't invent.
Facts in our reporting, founding years, ownership, figures, quotes, are drawn from primary sources: company records, official announcements, reputable reporting, and the businesses themselves. When we cite data, we name where it came from.
We never fabricate an address, a phone number, a set of hours, a founder, or a statistic. If we cannot verify a detail, we leave it out. Unknown always beats invented.
Corrections
We fix mistakes quickly, in the open.
We would rather be corrected than be wrong. If you spot an error, an outdated listing, or a business that has closed, tell us at our contact page and we will verify and fix it fast.
When a published article changes in a meaningful way after the fact, we mark it with a dated update note rather than editing it silently.
Advertising & independence
Money never buys coverage.
BLK Society carries advertising and sponsorships, and they help keep the platform free. Advertising is always clearly labeled as such.
Advertising and sponsorship never buy editorial coverage, a verification badge, or placement in the directory. Who we cover and who we verify is decided independently of who pays us. That wall is not negotiable.
Scope
United States, for now.
Our directory and reporting focus on Black-owned businesses based in the United States. It is where we can verify thoroughly and serve readers best. As we expand, we will say so here.
